Sheila LavertyDr. Sheila Laverty is a surgeon scientist, and, in addition to her researcher pursuits, she is a practicing specialist in Equine Surgery and Chief of Equine Surgery at University of Montreal’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dr. Laverty obtained her veterinary degree from University College Dublin and completed a residency in equine surgery at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Laverty’s Comparative Orthopaedic Research Laboratory has focused on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and therapy of joint disease for over 20 years. Dr. Laverty was a member of the Canadian Arthritis Network, a federally funded Center of Excellence research network of 150 researchers. Dr. Laverty is currently serving on the research advisory committee of the Arthritis Society of Canada and Quebec’s Network for Cell, Tissue and Gene Therapies (ThéCell -supported by the Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé). Dr. Laverty’s research is currently funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and ThéCell.

Dr. Laverty was the recipient of the institutional Pfizer Research excellence prize on two occasions. She has also recently received an honorary Fellowship of International Society of Orthopaedic Research from the Combined Orthopaedic Research society. Dr. Laverty has 140 publications in leading scientific journals, was an invited speaker for over 100 lectures, and supervised over 70 post-graduate students, including 15 American College of Veterinary Surgery (ACVS) diplomates.
